Gretchen Stumhofer, MD
Dr. Gretchen Stumhofer’s healthcare journey is a unique blend of adventure and unwavering dedication. She began her path in healthcare as an EMT at the age of 18, eventually serving as a smokejumper with the US Forest Service.
Educationally, her story is equally captivating. Dr. Stumhofer graduated from Stanford University in 2011 with a degree in Geological and Environmental Sciences. Along the way, she took detours, including fighting fires and a stint as a professional road bike racer. In 2019, she achieved her dream of becoming a physician, graduating from UC San Diego School of Medicine. Following this, she completed her residency in Emergency Medicine at Loma Linda University Medical Center in 2022.
Dr. Stumhofer’s inspiration to pursue a career in healthcare was deeply rooted in a profound desire to serve individuals during their most critical moments, a commitment that continues to define her. The dynamic nature of emergency medicine, with its ever-changing challenges, has always held her fascination. She brings a diverse range of interests to her medical practice, including addiction medicine, climate and health, austere medicine, addressing societal factors that impact health disparities, and exploring the potential of machine learning and artificial intelligence in medicine.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Stumhofer finds balance and rejuvenation in outdoor activities like cycling, surfing, sailing, skiing, and hiking. Yoga, reading, and treasured moments with her family also enrich her life.
