General Surgery
Luke Martin, MD, FACS is board certified in general and colon and rectal surgery. He comes to Teton Valley Health after several years in busy academic practice at the Huntsman Cancer Hospital and the University of Utah Hospital.
His clinical practice includes a broad scope of general and colon and rectal surgical problems, such as hernia repair, gallbladder removal, vascular access, gastrointestinal cancers, diverticulitis, hemorrhoids, inflammatory bowel disease, upper and lower endoscopy, and removal of skin and soft tissue lesions. He has a particular interest in the use of minimally invasive techniques whenever possible.
He believes in providing individualize, holistic care that begins with what matters most to each person. He enjoys discussing the range of treatment options available and includes each patient in the decision-making process.
Dr. Martin grew up in Austin, Texas. He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, earning a degree in economics. Following medical school at the McGovern School of Medicine in the Texas Medical Center, he completed General Surgery residency at the University of Utah which included two years of dedicated research time. He then completed a Colon and Rectal Surgery fellowship at the University of Minnesota.
Outside of the hospital, he enjoys spending time in the mountains with his wife, young children, and dogs. They enjoy trail running, downhill and skate-skiing, biking, canyoneering, camping, and fishing.
Orthopedic Surgery
Stefan Turkula, MD is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon and a specialist in sports medicine. His practice centers around both surgical and non-surgical approaches to managing injuries and disorders of the knee, shoulder, hip, and elbow. Dr. Turkula possesses advanced training and technical expertise in intricate arthroscopic techniques, as well as in procedures related to cartilage/meniscus restoration, joint preservation, shoulder, and knee replacements. His experience extends to serving as a team physician for professional sports leagues including the NHL, MLB, and NCAA. Furthermore, Dr. Turkula, a former national champion freestyle skier, maintains an active role as a team physician for the US Ski and Snowboard Team.
Dr. Turkula’s educational journey began with an undergraduate bachelor of science degree in biology at the University of Utah, where he also participated in football and lacrosse. Subsequently, he earned his medical doctorate (MD) at Drexel University College of Medicine. He completed an intensive five-year orthopedic surgery residency at Cooper University Hospital, a prominent level 1 trauma center on the east coast, where he honed his skills in managing complex fractures. Following his residency, Dr. Turkula pursued a Sports Medicine and Shoulder fellowship at the University of Minnesota and TRIA Orthopedic Center. During this fellowship, he contributed to medical and surgical care for events such as the X-Games and provided support to sports teams like the Minnesota Wild, Minnesota Twins, University of Minnesota, and Gustavus Adolphus College. Currently, Dr. Turkula remains committed to academic pursuits, research, and educational activities through his involvement with various national and local medical societies.
Beyond his professional life, Dr. Turkula, along with his wife Janet, and children Leif and Juniper, together with their golden retriever Walter, is delighted to be a part of the Teton Valley community. When not in the operating room or clinic, he enjoys skiing, mountain biking, fishing, hiking, and relishing the outdoors to the fullest.
Podiatric Surgery
Christine McGurn, DPM is a dedicated podiatrist with expertise in a wide range of foot and ankle conditions. Her services encompass both conservative and surgical treatments, addressing issues such as bunions, forefoot deformities, diabetic reconstruction, and various foot and ankle traumas.
Originally from Massachusetts, Dr. McGurn earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Stonehill College. She continued her education at Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine in Ohio, followed by a comprehensive three-year residency in Reconstructive Rearfoot and Ankle Surgery at Hoboken University Medical Center.
With board certification in Podiatric Medicine and Foot Surgery, Dr. McGurn brings a wealth of experience. She spent several years working in New York City before relocating to Teton Valley with her family, driven by her love for the mountains and outdoor activities.
Outside of her practice, she enjoys biking, hiking, snowboarding, running, reading, cooking, and exploring new places. Dr. McGurn is committed to patient education, conducting thorough exams, and developing thoughtful treatment plans. Her aim is to provide the highest quality foot and ankle care in a welcoming environment, ensuring patients are active participants in their treatment and recovery. Whether dealing with fungal infections or fractures, she helps patients regain their mobility and return to the activities they love. Her patient-focused approach serves individuals of all ages, including athletes and diabetics, offering both surgical and conservative solutions.
